Best Start Grant

The Best Start Grant is a program from the Scottish Government that provides one-time cash payments to low-income families with children. The School Age Payment is a £314.45 payment that can help families prepare for their child's first year of primary school. This payment can be used for things like school bags, trips, or after-school activities. You can apply for the payment even if your child doesn't start school, or if you're deferring their start date. 

To apply for the Best Start Grant, you can contact your local council. Most councils accept applications from July to the end of March. After you apply, Social Security Scotland will send you a letter within 30 days to let you know what they decided and how much you'll receive.
